THAILAND-MALAYSIA BORDER

click for large picture
The Thailand-Malaysia border was surveyed in March 2001, in collaboration with civilian and military authorities. 65 communities were visited and 46 people were interviewed. The Thailand Landmine Impact Survey identified two (2) provinces affected by the presence of landmines or unexploded ordnance (UXO): Nakhon Si Thammarat and Yala. Four (4) communities with a total population of 2,200 suffer adverse social-economic impacts.

A total of 10 victims were recorded. None was reported injured during the last 24 months, which shows that landmines probably be a minor problem in this region.

Most areas contaminated by landmines and UXO are located near the border with Malaysia or in areas where internal conflicts occured. A total of seven (7) dangerous areas were found. Landmines and UXO restrict safe access to forest resources, and to a lesser degree, safe access to cropland and pasture.
