Mr. Co-Chairs, Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Director General of Thailand Mine Action Center
(TMAC). Thank you very much for
giving me an opportunity to inform you of the APL stockpile destruction in
Thailand.
As
you know, Thailand will have completely operated APL stockpile destruction in
accordance with the Ottawa Convention by the end of April 2003. In this regard, 4,970 APLs are retained
for training and research purposes.
In
summary, since the establishment of TMAC in November 1999, Thailand has
continuously destroyed approximately 286,245 APLs. There are 51,480 APLs left for destroying within April 2003. The stockpile destruction is planned to
operate three times this year, beginning from February to 22 April 2003. The average quantity of APL stockpile
destruction is around 1,000-2,000 APLs/day, depending on their types and sizes.
We
strongly believe that the first success of 4-year stockpile destruction will
assist Thailand to be a free-mine country in the near future. However on behalf of Thai people, we
would like to thank all donor countries for your support.
Thank
You.
